Sroll down to learn more about the many varieties of garlic we grow here at Crooked Clove.
Softneck Garlic
All three of the softneck garlics we grow here at Crooked Clove are of the artichoke variety. These varieties are a bit milder than many of our hardneck varieties, yet still have good flavor. Artichoke cultivars are widely adapted and grow well in a wide range of climates.

French Red
French Red is our best performing softneck. It grows beautiful bulbs with nice big cloves. It is not picky and can tolerate both wet and dry conditions with ease. It's great to cook with and stores very well, 8+ months.

Lorz Italian
Lorz Italian is an heirloom brought from Italy to Washington in the 1800's. It adapts to both hot summers and cooler climates and is quite productive. It has beautiful, plump cloves and a complex garlicy flavor. We love using it in sauces as it holds its flavor well. Stores well, 8+ months.

Kettle River Giant
Kettle River is a highly productive cultivar. It originates in the Kettle River area in NE Washington, near to the Canadian boarder. It can grow very large heads and has nice big cloves. This is one of the more flavorful varieties of softneck garlic. We love the flavor of Kettle River in dips and it makes an exceptional garlic butter. Also stores very well, 8+ months.
Rocambole
Rocamboles are among the most widely grown and coveted garlic cultivars. Their raw heat is nicely balanced by a deep and rich flavor, with sweet undertones. They are excellent in any dish where you want to showcase the garlic flavor. Of course, with this being said, the rocamboles downside is that they do not store long. The cloves are big and easy to peel, which contributes to this. Sometimes, you will find double cloves.

German Red
German Red is a dependable variety, growing good sized bulbs in a wide variety of conditions. It does well in clay soil. This is our hottest rocambole, with a very strong garlic flavor.

Russian Red
Introduced to Canada in the late 1800's by a religious sect fleeing persecution, Russian Red is one of the more flavorful rocamboles. The flavor is deep and full, and goes well with any dish calling for garlic. It produces large bulbs with brown cloves.

Carpathian
Carpathian is an interesting rocambole. Its flavor is distincly different from the rest of our rocamboles. It can be described as a more earthy flavor as well as full and rich. It hails from the Carpathian Mountains in Southwest Poland.

Spanish Roja
Spanish Roja is a favorite among garlic lovers for its smooth, true garlic flavor. It is also one of the best looking Rocamboles with beautiful pink tinged cloves.

Killarney
Killarney has a great deep garlic flavor and is one of the best tasting Rocamboles. It produces well and thrives in a variety of soil conditions. In our experience, it is one of the shorter storing Rocamboles.

Ukrainian Red
Ukrainian Red is another fine example of the Rocamboles. It has a bit of heat up front that dissapates into the classic deep garlic flavor Rocamboles are known for. We love it both raw and cooked in a wide variety of dishes.
Porcelain
Porcelains are the most impressive garlic plants. They grow lush and tall, and the bulbs can get very large. It is typical to find 4-6 huge cloves. They peel easily and have great market appeal. They are very cold hardy and grow well in Northern climates, at the same time doing better in Southern climates than many other hardnecks. Porcelains also have the highest allicin content, the sulfer compound that gives garlic its therapeutic benefits.

Armenian
Medium in heat with an intense earthy flavor, Armenian is a great addition any garlic grower's collection. Beautiful, purple tinged wrappers and large cloves make it highly attractive as well. It is from the Armenian village of Hadrut Karabach near the Azerbaijan border

Romanian Red
Romanian red, like most porcelains, is a large garlic with about 4-6 very large cloves per bulb. It has a rich and robust flavor with medium heat and an aftertaste that lingers. It grows well in cold winters and likes well drained soil. It is a highly regarded medicinal garlic, with a high allicin content.

Music
A popular strain, our music is the largest garlic we grow! Some bulbs are even bigger than elephant garlic. We love having the jumbo sized cloves to cook with, and enjoy the mild heat and punget garlic flavor. It grows well in many soil types, but does like to be well drained. Beautiful, uniform bulbs with a purple blush.

German White
German White is widely grown and known for its hardiness in very cold winter climates. Large white bulbs with just a hint of purple contain 4-6 large and easy to peel cloves. A mild heat and well balanced flavor makes it a great all purpose garlic.
Purple Stripe
Purple stripes are genetically the ancestors of all other garlics. They grow best in cooler Northern climates with cold winters. They produce striking bulbs with vivid purple stripes. Purple Stripes are fantastic culinary garlics. They have a strong, rich garlic flavor and are great for roasting.

Turkish Red
Turkish Red is a wonderful all around garlic. It has great flavor raw, and holds up when cooked. We have had many people tell us that it is their favorite variety of ours. It makes some of the best garlic hummus you'll ever have!
Marbled Purple Stripe
Marbled Purple Stripes grow well in Northern climates, but can do well in Southern climates as well. They have more cloves than the Porcelains, but fewer than the Purple Stripes. They can be quite hot when raw and are not as prominent when cooked.

Bogatyr
Bogatyr is a strong flavored garlic that comes from the Moscow area. It can pack some heat when raw, especially if there has been a hot summer. It is an easy growing garlic that is more forgiving than some others in regards to drought and weed tolerance.

Metechi
Like Bogatyr, Metechi is an easy grower and is hightly productive in both Northern and Southern climates. It is among the best of the hardneck varieties for warmer regions. Metechi is one of the hotter varieties of Marbled Purple Stripes, but not as hot as our Asiatic varieties.

Khabar
Khabar is a beautiful garlic with great flavor. It gets nice and creamy when cooked and wont be overpowering. It is one of our more mild garlics. A great producer and customer favorite.

These are the most striking of our garlics. Glazed Purple Stripes have beautiful purple wrappers with silver and gold undertones. They store well and make fine culinary garlic.

Purple Glazer
Purple Glazer is one of the prettiest garlics we grow. It has beautiful deep purple wrappers and nice big cloves. It has a nice strong garlic flavor but is not very hot. On our farm, it is one of our top producing varieties with great yields!

Red Rezan
A medium sized beauty, Red Rezan is a striking garlic. The cloves have a satiny purple sheen and the wrappers are covered with bright purple stripes. It is a mild flavored garlic that originated southeast of Moscow.
Asiatic
These are the ealiest maturing varieties of garlic on the farm. Their leaves are more of a yellow green than our other cultivars. Asiatics actually store quite well if harvested at the right time. We harvest them when only two leaves have began to turn brown. These are some of the hottest garlics and can be quite firey when raw, but they also have complex flavors.

Asian Tempest
This is probably the most well known Asiatic cultivar, and for good reason. It is productive and reliable, and produces well formed, large cloves. Hot when raw, but tames down and has exceptional flavor when cooked.

Bhote Lasun
Bhote Lasun is a very interesting garlic that we got from our friends over at Blue Fortune. It is a garlic sourced directly from the mountains of Nepal and is very rare. It is a very hot and firey variety with an almost sweet aftertaste and grows medium bulbs with 3-6 cloves. One of our favorite garlics here on the farm for its unique flavor, it is a bit tricky to grow as it is very early emerging and needs a little extra protection in late winter.

Korean Red
This is one of the hottest garlics we grow, very hot when eaten raw, it does mellow out when cooked. Korean Red grows beautiful bulbs with large cloves that are easy to peel. A little goes a long way when cooking with Korean Red!

Russian Inferno
Hot and spicy when raw, with a heat that just keeps building, Russian Inferno is a great addition to any garlic lovers garden and kitchen! The large cloves are a gorgeous deep mahogany.
Turban
Turbans are weakly bolting and early harvesting. The bulbs are distinctly short and flattened., but are beautiful with their bright purple stripes. They do not store as long as the Asiatics and are quite quick to sprout. They are hot when raw, but more simple and subtle when cooked.

Thai Fire
This turban variety was first found in a Bangkok market before being brought to the states. The cloves are a pretty light brown color. Thai Fire sprouts very quickly and it is likely you will see shoots appearing before planting. It has a heat that builds to a good intensity.

Shantung Purple
Shantung Purple has a firey hot flavor when raw, even more so than the other turbans. The bulbs are beautiful with 6-8 large cloves.

Chinese Purple
This variety grows well in warm climates. It ripens early, but stores a bit longer than most other turbans. LIke other Turbans, it has immediate heat when raw.
